Die-hard fans of the Tennessee-based Crowned Heads know that the company is not content with simply crafting a core-line cigar and letting the humidors do the rest. Instead, they like to keep cigar enthusiast on their toes, releasing special, limited-edition versions of their most beloved brands on a semi-annual basis. These cigars often incorporate the same core blend as the cigars they are based on, making small adjustments to accommodate particular vitolas that accentuate the core-line cigars we all know and love.
Case in point is the Crowned Heads Le Carême Belicosos Finos LE 2022; this fine-tuned specimen first debuted in 2018, and has previously seen reinforcements in 2019 and 2021. The cigar is based on the fan-favorite Le Carême line, which was named after Marie-Antoine Carême and his popularization of the soufflé, as the cigar took on a profile similar to chocolate soufflé.
Differing from the trunk-pressed shape of the standard Le Carême, the limited Belicosos Finos is round, boasting an expertly crafted belicoso-style head atop a 5½” x 52 format. The blend showcases a Grade-A Dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Sumatra binder, and all-Nicaraguan filler, with the wrapper (at least of this quality) being a rare find in today's market. The blend was found to smoke exceptionally well in this format, with the tapered head brilliantly concentrating the smoke onto the palate and bringing out complexities of freshly tilled soil, toasted oak, espresso, and yes, plenty of rich chocolate.
