El Mago, meaning 'The Wizard,' draws inspiration from the remarkable life journey of Maria and Gonzalo Torre, lovingly referred to as Babi and Pepe by their grandchild. Tragically, their lives were cut short on June 24, 2021, during the unexpected collapse of The Champlain Towers in Miami, FL. The name Mago comes from the initial letters of their names, a poignant tribute to their enduring memory and the legacy they left behind.
This brand pays homage to a Cuban tradition deeply rooted in the family's heritage. Maria was renowned as a master cigar roller, while Gonzalo humorously claimed the title of a "master smoker." Together, they epitomized the quintessential Cuban-Miami experience, with Gonzalo enjoying a cigar at the hotel's front desk daily. Their shared moments included savoring Cuban-style cigars, sipping Cuban coffee, sharing laughter, and weaving tales of their remarkable journey.
Their odyssey spanned five countries, starting in Cuba and leading them to Czechoslovakia, Canada, Venezuela, and finally settling in Miami. Gonzalo's daring escape from Cuba to Czechoslovakia under the pretense of military orders marked the beginning of their extraordinary saga. They married in a college dormitory hall in 1965, facing not honeymoon planning, but the daunting task of fleeing communism.
With just $100 to their name, the Torre family embarked on their Canadian chapter, working as a janitor and librarian. Their determination shone through as they climbed the professional ladder, eventually becoming Managing Director and Principal. After Venezuela, they settled in Miami, where Gonzalo invested in The James Hotel, an iconic Art Deco-styled establishment featured proudly on our cigar label. For over 30 years, the Torre family operated this hotel, enjoying the company of their three children and six grandchildren.
Their journey culminated in an emotional moment of triumph when Maria turned to Gonzalo and said, "We made it." El Mago is a heartfelt tribute to their love, resilience, and enduring legacy.
