It's not often that you find a trained surgeon transitioning from the medical field and into premium cigars, but this is precisely the case with Dr. Gaby Kafie and his Kafie 1901 Cigars company. After developing a rare ocular disease, Kafie was no longer able to perform surgery. Instead, he headed back to his roots in Honduras, launching his own brand and cigar factory in 2013.

Operating with surgical precision, Kafie 1901 Cigars have gained a die-hard following in craft cigar circles. At the core of their collection lies the Kafie 1901 Don Fernando Maduro cigar, described by the company as their foundational blend. This cigar begins with a dark and oily Cuban-seed wrapper that is aged for five to six years. This leaf is grown in Nicaragua and aged in Honduras. The remainder of the blend is a proprietary recipe for Kafie 1901, including a Honduran binder and fillers of Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic (with each leaf being aged for three to four years).

Despite the intimidating wrapper, the Kafie 1901 Don Fernando Maduro cigar is not overwhelming in strength. This blend is medium to full in body, showcasing balanced complexities that are very approachable for a wide variety of smoking preferences. This includes standout flavors of oak, roasted nuts, touches of pepper, and punchy baker's cocoa.
