In January of 2016, we, at Smoke Inn Cigars, had the tremendous honor of hosting an exclusive event to celebrate José Orlando Padrón's milestone 90th birthday. The event was accompanied by a special cigar (in both natural and maduro varieties) that has since gone on to become one of the most sought-after releases from Padrón, due to the extremely low production numbers (200 boxes in total) at the time.
Enthusiasts were then delighted by the news that the cigars would return as a TAA-exclusive release in 2018... but 2018 came and went without the black-banded rarity appearing on store shelves. Not always punctual, but ever dependable, Padrón has now delivered, introducing the Padrón Black No. 89 on a much wider scale than the initial 2016 exclusive.
Padrón Black No. 89 is a fascinating release from Padrón, a company known for its traditional approach and uniformity throughout a small stable of highly acclaimed products. For starters, the cigar's blend is completely unspecified, prompting enthusiasts to trust the company to offer a special smoking experience regardless (rest assured, Padrón delivers). Additionally, the cigars, sized at 6" x 46 (corona extra), are without box-press—a longtime signature attribute of Padrón's cigars. And then there's the band, which could be described as a cross between Padrón's "Thousand Series" line and "Anniversary" lines, with a dapper gold-on-black label covering the counterfeit-proof sub-band of the company's more luxurious offerings.
José O. Padrón passed away one year after this cigar's original release—a significant loss for the world of premium cigars. Padrón Black No. 89 now serves as fitting tribute to one of the most influential minds the cigar industry has ever known.
The Padron Anniversary SI Exclusive is no longer available. Check out the 1964 Anniversary in either Maduro or Natural!
