The cigars made their worldwide debut in 1991, as Davidoff made the decision to move production from Cuba to the Dominican Republic. Grand Cru was crafted as a replacement for Davidoff's original Château series (named after famous Bordeaux vineyard estates), maintaining a connection with the world of French wine, with the name translating to mean "great growth" in French.
The cigars are part of an unofficial series that cigar enthusiasts know as "White Label," containing other favorites such as Davidoff's Signature and Aniversario cigars. Grand Cru is a sophisticated blend, taking advantage of the world-renowned tobaccos from the legendary Kelner family and their vast Dominican tobacco farms.
A diverse selection of Dominican tobaccos make up the filler blend, including Piloto, San Vicente, and Olor varietals. For the binder, master blender Hendrik Kelner showcases his engineering talents, incorporating a unique hybrid creation of Connecticut and Habano-seed tobaccos grown in Ecuador. Finally, as with nearly all White Label blends, the cigars are finished with a silky Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. This combination produces a mild to medium body, offering a focus on complex and evolving flavor nuances throughout.
